Registering with SEVIS

According to the new government visa and participant tracking regulations, all J-1 visa program participants MUST confirm the start of their program, upon arrival at the host-site. Your sponsor agency MUST receive confirmation from you within 10 days of your entrance in US in order to validate your visa in SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System).

Failure to report that you have arrived at your host-site to start your program within 15 days of your visa start date will automatically invalidate your J-1 visa in the SEVIS government database. This means that you will be illegal in the United States.

Attention: If during your stay in the US some of the data registered in SEVIS at the beginning modify take care to sent the new information to your sponsor agency so they update them in time, otherwise your program status will be CANCELED.

What is SEVIS?

The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE formerly the INS) now maintains a mandatory tracking database called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). SEVIS tracks all participants' movements while in the US. It tells the U.S. government where you work and if you are still on the program. If your Current U.S. Address (place of employment) is wrong in SEVIS you will be removed from the program, be required to immediately leave the country and your ability to obtain another visa to enter the U.S. may be jeopardized.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FAIL TO REGISTER IN SEVIS?

In case you want to apply again next year for J-1 visa, H2B visa (working visa), tourist visa etc. your chance to be accepted are minimal. Those who have been cancelled from SEVIS have almost no chance of going back in US in the future.
